Atheists; do we really need faith to be rational?

There are at least two common misconceptions most religious people have who claim that it takes more “faith” to be an atheist, than it does to believe in “god.” These misconceptions are about the same of those who say it takes more “faith” to believe in science than it does to simply believe in their god(s). All of the three major religions, are based on the stories of the OT of the bible; the muslims believe that their “prophet” Mohamed, was sitting in a cave for years talking to an angel, and then he rode a winged-horse into the sky and then went up to “heaven.” But before he departed for his final trip, he met with Moses, jesus, Abraham, and a whole host of other prophets. The Christians on the other hand, believe that jesus was the son of god – or that he was god himself. Most believe he was born of a virgin; and after his mom had been raped by a ghost; however, the Mormons believe that god simply fucked the christ out of her little virgin ass, somewhere in space, and on another planet. And then the Jews don’t believe any of the above deluded nonsense – they simply cling to the bat-shit crazy stories of the Old Testament (dirt-man, rib-woman, the talking-snake, the great-flood, and a 6000 year old earth). And they’re the ones who believe all of this deluded irrational bullshit – why in the hell do they think that we need faith simply to be rational?

The first misconception Christians make when addressing me and this issue of faith in science, VS faith in their “god,” is that they assume that I was once just like them, and that I believed in their “god.” The second misconception is a misunderstanding of science itself; which is simply rooted in their ignorance of science. They speak of the Darwinian Theory of Evolution, as just being another type of religion, and of Darwin as just being some kind of a false god. They talk about the big-bang and Darwinian Theory as if they were both the same science. Some even believe that Darwin was attempting explained how the universe was made, and how life came into being; when the fact is Darwinian Theory only postulates that the species of living things we see today, only survived through natural selection in response to environmental changes (this is why, we don’t have many animals left today, who both eat and shit from the same hole; we just have a bunch of Christians, who still talk out of their asses).

One doesn’t need faith to believe in science; one only needs a working brain, and an understanding of science. Most religious people believe the bat-shit crazy dogmas of their deluded beliefs as truths. They have simply created their own reality – worlds were snakes talk, virgins have children, the dead rise and there’s an all-powerful space-daddy watching them from the sky.

I have always believed that most any child can learn and excel in science; but only if their minds haven’t first been polluted and poisoned by the ignorance of religion. Today we are seeing Christians changing history and teaching fairytales to children as science – no people, “jesus” did not have a pet dinosaur. The mental abuse and intellectual harm you are causing to your children should be a criminal offence – you are simply creating more little idiots and brain-dead morons!

I have pondered the idea that some kind of creature might have had a hand in creating the universe. However, it’s an insult to say that the made-up Gawd in the buy-bull had any hand in it.

No, Christians, I have never believed that any of your utter deluded religious tripe was true. And stop believing that I need faith to believe in science – I simply understand science – you, simply don’t have a fucking clue, what science really is about.

I only have one thing I disagree with you on this post. You don't really need an understanding of science in the beginning but you do need a teacher that can make science interesting. I think that is how most teacher fail in teaching students about science. If I had kids of school age, I think that I would have them watch Mythbusters every week. I think it is a program that makes science both fun and interesting.

I couldn’t agree more that we need to make science more interesting and fun for school age kids. The main problem is that the Christians have been at war against science and reason for so long, that we don’t teach real science to children anymore. Making an acid/base volcano out of vinegar and baking soda might be interesting to young children, but unless the reaction is fully explained by someone who understands the process; then their only providing entertainment rather than teaching science. Thanks to the 80s, the Christians and the neoconservatives, we now have the same teacher, teaching language-arts, gym and science – and this is one of the main reasons why we are failing our children in education.

The big thing when I was a kid was chemistry kits; the Christian preachers claimed that a child experimenting with chemistry was the quickest path to witch-craft, “demons” and the “devil.” They objected to anything that might make a child think –any ideas were OK just as long as they stayed within the bounds of their religious dogmas. And this is why today we see dinosaurs with saddles on their backs, and children ridding them.

Myth-busters is a good show – it might even get some children to start thinking; however, for the most part, it’s not about real science either. There was a kid’s science show called the (Mr. Wizard) show back the 80s which did a good job of explaining science to children – it was hosted by a real scientist and children. My children would watch the reruns on Nickelodeon every day. And yes, the ignorant Christian preachers attacked this show, simply because it was called the Mr. Wizard show.

I’d like to see a show called the Christian myth-busters show; however, it would be so easy to debunk the Christian-bullshit that the show would only last for a few weeks at best!
If Jesus had a dinosaur what would it be?
I think I'd have a Triceratops ranch out in Montana. http://laughinginpurgatory.blogspot.com/

Hehehe

I only wish that at about the same time when the young “jesus,” had “started” “his” “ministry” that he had a baby T-Rex for a pet; a few months later and Mr. T-Rex: “yum, jesus mighty tasty.” Then today, we wouldn’t have to deal with all of this deluded Christian bullshit!
PS I sure wish I could post comments on your blog –none of the login formats work for me?
Strange to say the least?
I just did a test and used the anonymous sign in and it worked. Try that out and put your name at the end of the message. Hopefully that will work!
One cannot shout it from the rooftops enough: Stop revising history and teaching children fairy tales. The disdain for science is appalling. Excellent article!!

Thanks. I just find it so sad that the religious have to change facts and science in order to maintain their deluded worldview. They use fear to discourage their children from Independent thinking – the only good thing is that it now seems to be backfiring on them. Children today have more access to information than at any other time in history; and most seem to have started seeing just how silly and childlike these beliefs really are. In a recent poll among evangelical children, over 80% said that they would stop attending church, after they moved out of their parent’s home.
I don't think that any group in power doesn't revise history. How would we as non-believers deal with history that we feel might cause problems with pushing our agenda. How many times have we as people changed history because it was in our best interest?
I don’t believe as atheists we have anything in our history that WE need to lie about, or cover-up. I have no personal connection to what happened in China 50 years ago, or what Stalin and Pol Pot did or didn’t do (the Christian revisionists have so contorted the facts in these events that any essences of truth is now irrelevant).

So Baconsbud, is this just about the idea that Christians have of all atheists, as being child molesters and eating Christian babies?
We might not want to change history as christians do but with people who gain power you can never be sure. Atheist might try changing how religion was seen as a positive factor in parts of US history or they might try to make religion seem more harmful at times when it wasn't. I think it is more about human nature to try and make history fit our own prejudice.
